5 Things To Look For While Choosing a Wireless Router

In every household today, you can easily see two devices on desks. Box-like and small, these look alike, and sometimes are confused to have the same function. Wi-Fi routers and modems may look alike, but they are completely different in their function!
Let’s begin with the differences. A modem is a device that connects you to your internet service provider, or ISP, and hence gives you access to the World Wide Web. However, a router enables you to connect multiple devices with the same internet connection, this was earlier done by multiple Ethernet ports, but now, and they are available in the wireless configuration.

When you look for a Wi-Fi router for you home, you need to keep in mind a few things:

1.       The latest configuration: Make sure that the router that you buy is the latest technology. These days, modems with Wi-Fi are also available, i.e., you get a built in modem inside a wireless router.

2.       Wireless speed: This basically has nothing to do with your internet speed, but tells you about the maximum speed that your local network (the one connected with the router) can reach upto. Look for wireless AC routers, which are 3x faster than the conventional ones.

3.       Wireless range: The range of a router is the area in which it can have a decent connectivity. This range can depend on many factors: how many radios and antennas it has what frequencies it broadcasts on, etc. This is weakened by obstacles in the path of the signal.

If you have problems with the shorter range of your Wi-Fi, you can always switch over to greater range Modem withWi-Fi or use a Wi-Fi range extender, for larger areas.

4.       QoS controls: Look for the Quality of service (QoS) traffic controls. This enables tracking the type of network traffic (web surfing, online gaming, Skype®, Netflix® and so on) and deciding which application deserves higher priority.

5.       Find the perfect match: Before you buy a Wireless router, take into account your needs, whether you just want to surf the net and do casual networking, or do you want to have some business network, whether you are a hard-core gamer, or a media lover; it will help you decide better on the speed and connectivity front before you invest.

With these tips in mind, you can easily choose among the best Wi-Fi routers in India.
